What is this? II

17 06 2008

So, for Father’s Day, we went over to Ryan’s uncle/aunt’s house (in Colfax, CA) for a bbq, and the kids found THIS:

It was 2 to 3 inches long.  In my preliminary research, I have yet to find anything close to a match.

What the heck is it?

Anyone?

Short-lived mystery…

Before I wrote this post, I sent the photo to http://www.bugguide.net for some help identifying it. Those entomologists are QUICK. Turns out she’s a species of Longhorn Beetle. That long “tail” is her ovipositor.

Cool!

A hairy beetle. I would have guessed a moth with no wings. You know, wingless. Cool.

Grace – I know. The pattern makes it look hairy like a moth, but it’s not! I still have not been able to determine whether this beetle is native to the area. In all my years living here, I’ve never seen one before…

I say alien. It should have it’s own show. Ultra-Smallville. Because it’s an insect. And it’s small. Well, compared to people.

Oh and thanks SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much for the check. I was not expecting it to be that much! You’re pretty much amazing 😀
